The Category & Business Development Analyst role is responsible for providing high quality insights and solutions to provide customers guidance and corrective actions to drive sales and profits. This function will utilize and continuously improve Young’s network "tool-kit" for Business Development. Perform analysis and coordinate the development of divisional and customer business plans by monitoring business performance against plan and providing recommendations based on results. Managing the sales reporting suite, insuring timely and accurate delivery and providing thoughtful analysis and business insights. This function will play a key role in the evolution of reporting and requires heavy Excel use and expertise, the ability to understand data and systems and the ability to produce a polished and professional presentation.



  • Demonstrable understanding of Category Management process, value, tools and legal limitations.
  • Monitor category performance against set goals and reports results and recommendations to management.
  • Identify trends and conduct root-cause analysis to determine actionable recommendations based on POS data.
  • Work with Business Development management to develop world class Business Development reporting.
  • Responsible for leading the strategic design and maintenance of Business Development applications. Identify, research and resolve technical problems. Ensure that the use of Business Development applications enhances business decision making capabilities.
  • Generate insights for business development growth and sales opportunities through analytics and region-specific data. Analyze, evaluate and develop recommendations for each category within the network.
  • Initiate, evaluate and conduct category reviews of retailer business with suggestions to improve client’s performance.
  • Conduct ongoing research to ensure complete knowledge of types and sizes, pricing, product sales information, competitive products and sales information.
  • Develop well planned and organized presentations, including industry information, cross merchandising ideas and data on in-store problems and conditions.
  • Identify best practices being executed by key competitors.
  • Create and analyze schematics and recognize opportunities and develop proposals for improving such schematics.
  • Ability to prepare and conduct presentations for shelf placements and improvements.
  • Ability to maintain Company priorities in the cold box, as well as maintaining equal to or greater share of the cold box vs. competition.
  • Analyze data, write descriptive summaries of gathered data, organize and prioritize research for further review by managers and clients.
  • Must be an integral part of project Scope, Spec, Design, Build, Launch illicit feedback on tools.
  • Must be able to create and communicate critical path of projects.
  • Actively participate in the space allocation, assortment, competitive analysis, pre- and post-promotional analysis and provide recommendations.
  • Possess a thorough understanding and knowledge of current schematics for assigned chain account(s).
  • Maintain and update space scorecard and distribution grid.
  • Secure and improve shelf positions on all Company products.
  • Work any resets for the assigned chain account(s).

Addiionally, the position will require proficient Data Management, Problem Solving and Communication skills to resolve issues.


    • A Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from an accredited four-year college or university in a business-related field is preferred, or related field experience is required.
    • Experience in Excel, specifically with Pivot Tables.
    • Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. This role also requires the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. This further requires the ability to effectively present information to top management, groups of managers, and customers.
    • Must have the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. This position also requires the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
    • Must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. This position also requires the ability to multitask in an ever-changing environment and demonstrate analytical skills to interpret financial/market data and prepare reports. This role requires the ability to work productively under stress and meet deadlines. Creativity, problem solving, project management, and excellent follow through skills are essential.
    • Must possess valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle and clean DMV record.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) environment
    • Must have advanced to expert Excel skills/knowledge.
    • Ability to write macros in Excel, utilize pivot tables, and import/export data to/from outside data sources.
    • Must have excellent communication, negotiation, analytical and objection handling skills.
    • Uses visuals, has ability to make multiple presentations.
    • Must have the ability to work with management, colleagues and customers throughout the business and industry at every level.
    • Ability to handle in-store execution.
    • Possess excellent time management skills. 


    • 3 years of analytical experience is preferred.
    • Prior retail merchandising experience is highly preferred.
    • Proficient in Diver, AS400, TM1 environments.
    • ProSpace or related space management software.
    • Prior experience using syndicated data, (IRI, ACNielsen) is preferred.
    • Ability to use demographic information, consumer panel data.
    • Ability to analyze current schematics, recognize opportunities, and develop proposals for improving schematics.
    • Complete knowledge of product types, sizes, distributors, and category sales information.
    • Coordinate and help implement seminars when needed.
