  • Overview

    Reporting to the Payroll Director the Payroll Manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily activities of the Payroll Department. The Manager must ensure procedures are followed and processes are completed timely, accurately and efficiently. The Payroll Manager must be able to problem-solve, think through solutions to resolve issues effectively and lead, develop and support the payroll team.


    • Manages the activities of 3 or more payroll staff in a centralized payroll department in carrying out responsibility for payroll preparation and processing for over 3,100 employees.
    • Ensures compliance with all applicable state, federal, and foreign wage and hour laws.
    • Ensures systems are set-up and updated to reflect our current employee base, including wages, benefits, sick and vacation time in line with contracts (union and non-union).
    • Manages special projects in addition to ensuring the processing of payroll is accurate and timely.
    • Collects time from Time Tracking system and resolves discrepancies in hours worked or PTO usage. 
    • Determines taxability of compensation in accordance with applicable federal, state and local provisions.
    • Compiles payroll data for hours worked including withholdings for benefits, 401k and taxes, garnishments and levies. Ensures payroll data is conveyed to appropriate federal and state authorities.
    • Processes commission and ad hoc checks per company guidelines.
    • Assists employees with questions and changes regarding timecards, deductions, exemption.
    • Communicates actively with Operations, HR and Accounting to review cross-departmental impacts and reconcile data sharing.
    • Manages federal and state taxes for multiple federal id’s; which includes processing amendments, tracers, quarter and year-end adjustments.
    • Maintains all payroll records and monitors the integrity of payroll systems.
    • Serves as a back-up to payroll administrators for processing weekly, bi-weekly and semi-monthly payrolls for Union and non-Union employees.
    • May perform additional duties as assigned.



    • A Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from an accredited four-year college university, and at least 3 to 5 years of payroll experience or equivalent experience required.
    • Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) preferred.
    • In-house payroll processing is required.
    • Working experience of multi-state tax at the federal, state and local levels required.
    • Experience with interpreting and managing Garnishments.
    • Knowledge of payroll and accounting practices and principles.
    • Understands and demonstrates problem-solving tools and methods.
    • Must be highly organized.
    • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Strong verbal and writing communication skills required.
    • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and effective communication skills are also required with a desire and ability to work and communicate as a team.



    • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred.
    • 5+ years of people management experience of 4 or more employees in a department.
    • Union experience preferred.
    • 6+ years of experience working with time and attendance, payroll and HRIS systems.
    • Experience using Kronos, Workday, Oracle Payroll, PeopleSoft, ADP or SAP is highly desirable.
    • Possess strong commitment to team environment dynamics with the ability to contribute expertise and do what it takes to get the job done.
    • Interact directly with the payroll team and collaborate on projects. 
    • Demonstrate the ability to always keep lines of communication open and take an active part in providing regular feedback and employee mentoring.
    • Experience with payrolls of 2,000+ employees preferred.
    • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) environment.
