  • Overview

    The Director, Safety is responsible for managing and reviewing the Company’s safety programs and processes. In this highly supported role, you will provide safety leadership across multiple states and locations, create a behavior-based safe work culture for all employees, ensure facility alignment with corporate safety standards, and ensure that safety policies and procedures comply with governmental laws and regulations.  The Director, Safety reports to the Vice President, Risk Management with a dotted line to the Executive Vice President, Human Resources.


    • Provide leadership and guidance to employees and line management on safety initiatives, programs and processes.
    • Develop and execute programs, policies, procedures and training to reduce hazards, total incident rates, auto accident frequency and raise safety awareness.
    • Facilitate a culture of workplace safety by managing the safety award program. This includes changing and/or stopping unsafe behavior while rewarding safe behavior.
    • Design and deliver employee training on safe work practices, safe driving, safe equipment-use, warehouse ergonomics, reporting of hazardous conditions, forklift certification, confined spaces, “train-the-trainer” and safety rules and regulations.
    • Audit pre-and-post inspections process in relation to commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.
    • Develop, guide and collaborate with safety committee teams.
    • Investigate industrial accidents, near-miss incidents, and occupational injuries to determine root causes. Communicate promptly and implement awareness and processes to mitigate risk of re-occurrence.
    • Conduct site safety audits, and employee safety observations to identify both safe and unsafe practices. Implement site audit process for location management and safety committees.
    • Develop, collect and report performance metrics to senior, divisional and line management.
    • Develop and maintain loss prevention, safety training records via vendor portals (i.e., J.J. Keller, Workday).
    • Work with Risk Management team to ensure overall corporate safety standards are being met and comply with federal, state and local government laws, rules and regulations.


    • A Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management or any other related field of study is required.
    • Environmental, Health & Safety professional designations, preferred.
    • Comprehensive and current knowledge of federal, state and local laws governing safety rules and regulations.
    • Previous and ongoing experience in developing, leading and maintaining behavior-based safety programs and processes for labor intensive environment.
    • 7 + years proven experience in a safety management role. 
    • Thorough knowledge of OSHA requirements.
    • Ability to build trust and confidence with field management, supervisors and employees.
    • Strong ability to influence, train and convey ideas clearly and concisely with all employees in both written and verbal communications.
    • Ability to adhere to the highest level of confidentiality of all Risk Management and Human Resources related information, and can work diligently in a highly collaborative and confidential team environment.
    • Willing and able to travel frequently, including driving to various facilities and air travel.
    • Occasionally able to work non-traditional hours. This may include occasional weekends and nights and will need to have flexible availability.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record and background.
